Our business can never really be a ‘home based business’. Our offices are many times in our homes but we always perform our work away from home. As a matter of fact, controlling time and travel costs is a key factor to making a profit in this industry.Your bottom line is very impacted by your company’s ability to proactively manage operations and stay organized. Any wasted trips to run back to your home office to get missing supplies or to bring one of your cleaners missing supplies is just simply a waste of time and money. Every cleaning company must have a supplies list available for their cleaners to check every time they come to the office.
Put together a list of the supplies that each cleaning person will need in their bucket as well as a list of the back up supplies that should be carried in the cleaner’s car. When working on a team of two both people usually have their own bucket. When working on a team of 3 the bathroom person usually has their own bucket and the kitchen and dusting person share a bucket. You do not want the bathroom and kitchen person sharing a bucket because they will be running back and forth to the one bucket to get things out of it. Both of these people should be carrying their buckets into the room that they are going to clean. The dusting person only needs glass cleaner and furniture polish which will easily fit into the kitchen bucket.
Give a copy of the bucket and supplies list to each new cleaner and review it during orientation and/or training. Use the list to introduce your supplies to your new cleaner. This list will insure that you do not forget to introduce them to any of your supplies, as well as getting them used to using the list each time they come to your office to check for restocking items they might need. This list will become one of your key chapters in your cleaning service ‘bible’. It is great to have when you are in a panic mode early in the morning trying to get a new or rearranged cleaning team out of the door. This is the most common ‘waste of time and energy’ thing I see when I am consulting in the field. Wasted trips back to the office for a 10 cent vacuum belt is simply a crime. Every cleaner should be carrying a minimum of 2 spare belts in their car. This will not happen if you have your cleaners check their supplies against a list each time they come to your office.
